Color correction for display adaptive tone mapping

The results below compare several methods for color correction used in combination with the display adaptive tone mapping [Mantiuk et al. 2008]. Each row shows results for a display of different dynamic range (20:1, 200:1 and 10000:1). For the 10000:1 display (3rd row) images have contrast enhanced by a factor 1.6 (some dark tones can be lost). All displays are simulated assuming that the images are viewed on an sRGB monitor.

Each column below the row with original image(s) shows the result for one of the color correction methods:

To observe

Constant saturation factor cannot preserve colors in tone-mapped images.

Additional comments

Note that on some displays (especially LCD) color appearance may change depending on the position on the screen and viewing direction. For the best viewing, make sure that the screen is seen from the perpendicular angle. If you see a difference between reference images in the middle column (they are the same), try scrolling the page.

The color matching criterion is the image that appears the closest to the reference image. The critertion IS NOT the preferred or the most natural image.
